Welcome

The CADCourse Space Station has been inspired by many years of working with TurboCAD as well as an eternal fascination with the idea of space travel. It was a pleasure for us to draw the space station using TurboCAD, as we believe that it is an excellent example of the programs’ power to model complex 3D objects.

We have often heard the request for training material that guides someone through the complete drawing procedure from the beginning to the end. Students want to see how a drawing is conceptualized, planned and then executed. This is more or less what we have tried to achieve in this set of movie tutorials, but due to the sheer magnitude of the project we have had to break it up into episodes.

In Episode I we will take you from scratch through the assembly of key modules of the space station. We start drawing the space station in 2D by tracing over scaled bitmaps to help us visualize what we need to draw. We then turn the plans into 3D models and assemble the pieces together. We also investigate quicker ways to speed up the 3D design process by using tools that are more appropriate for different situations in 3D design. You will also see the authors make mistakes during the drawing process, just like in the real world, and see how they fix them with explanations how to recognize the same errors in your own drawing procedures.

The interface to the tutorials is this HTML document. You can click the thumbnails of the movies to automatically launch the flash movie and you can select the TurboCAD drawing for that particular exercise to try the operations yourself in TurboCAD.  A bulleted list next to each thumbnail shows the topics covered in that particular movie. The index at the end of the document shows an alphabetic listing of TurboCAD tools and which movies contain those particular concepts.

Remember that the movies have sound. You will need to be sure that your speaker volume is turned up (or down) sufficiently to hear the narration.

Enjoy …
