| The Evolution of the
Wall Tool
Over the years TurboCAD has offered a variety of solutions for
the process of creating walls and then inserting door or window
symbols. In this article we will briefly examine the history of
the methods used for these tasks. We will start from the basics
of creating lines and arcs through to the existing drag and drop
methods used today in TurboCAD Professional v8. The narrated streaming media videos show the progression of how the program has developed to reach its current functionality. We will also present a layering technique that can be easily used to view both 2D and 3D representations of the doors and windows within the same wall. In the beginning (way back in the DOS days) walls had to be created
by drawing single lines and then using the parallel line tool to
create the wall thickness. The modification tools such as Meet 2
Lines and Shrink/Extend Line were used to clean up the lines so
that they appeared as walls. In order to insert a door you would
have to Trim out the unwanted lines to illustrate the entry. |

| Then TurboCAD introduced the Double Line tool that would allow a set of parallel lines to be drawn at the same time. Also some editing tools such as the T-Meet and X-Meet commands were used to more easily create clean intersections between walls. The problem with these offerings was that any editing of the walls resulted in gaps that would exist from where the walls had been previously joined.
Then came the TurboCAD Wall tool that offered some intelligent behavior in that it allowed you to draw walls that automatically cleaned up the intersections without the need for the T-meet. Further, if walls were moved, the gaps would automatically clean up and if a door block was dragged and dropped into the wall it would automatically orient itself to the angle of the wall and a gap would be automatically created (negating the need for trimming out unwanted sections). In V8 there were some dramatic improvements to the Wall tool in that the same wall would appear differently depending on your viewing angle. The Wall-Opening tool was introduced to be able to have both 2D and 3D representations of the door. In plan/world/top view the walls would take on the appearance of the traditional 2D walls, but in 3D the walls would appear in a 3D opening. Now with the release of the 1st Windows Product the whole procedure is automated (to a degree). You can drag a 3D window into a wall and automatically get both the 2D and 3D representation simply by changing views. The 1st Windows plug-in works seamlessly for windows but still needs to have 2D representations for doors. If you create a layer for the 2D representation and a layer for the 3D representation, you can quickly turn those layers on or off depending on what you want to see. Gone are the days of creating gaps in walls manually – it can now be automated via simple drag and drop procedures. | |
